DSL is an analog line, a modem is always involved.

There are two usual ways that DSL is set up:

1) The DSL modem attaches to a PC and the PC gets the IP
   address;

2) The DSL modem attaches to a router, which gets the IP
   address and NATs the PC(s) behind it.
