Sounds similar to a problem we had at a TLUG meeting a couple of years
back. Someone brought in a Sharp laptop with WinME installed, but both
Debian and RedHat couldn't get passed the first stage.

The solution was to boot from a DOS floppy and load the install kernel
from within DOS. After the 'real' kernel was installed, everything
worked normally. It must have had something to do with the probing that
the installer does.

For RedHat, try copying the 'dosutils' folder from the 1st install disk
to the hard drive and run 'autoboot.bat' or 'loadlin.exe' if that fails.

Mandrake and Debian shouldn't be too different.
