The standard command line X configuration tool is xf86config.  You
should know your video card and the monitor's vertical and horizontal
refresh rates.   You also need to know the video card.  

Towards the end of the configuration, you're given an option for favored
resolutions.

The only other gotcha I can think of is that with an MS optical
Intellimouse, you should, before starting X, go to the file that
xf86config creates, /etc/X11/XF86Config (in most distros and FreeBSD,
not sure about SuSE) and change the "Intellimouse" to "IMPS/2".  Also,
add the option underneath the pointer section

Option "ZAxisMapping"   "4 5" to enable you to use a scroll wheel. As
that's the mouse I've used for awhile, not sure about any other mice.
