Thanks for the reply. I've checked the 'C-h a fontset' as you suggested. 'M-x
describe-fontset' gives back "no fontsets being used." The other help option
suggests 'M-x list-fontsets' gives the same message. This confuses me, because
the leim RPM was installed as well. Doesn't that contain the fonts it says it's
not using? the skk dictionary and quail directories are there. (Do I have to
somehow tell emacs directly, USE THESE leim FONTS..."open the pod bay doors
HAL"?) Trying to get fonts, my searches for RPMs, and emacs/Mule pages of fonts
for Japanese give lots of X -specific fonts but not for console/non-X. I can
now certainly see why 1) people just use X, since emacs uses X's fonts (wish I
had the space on the machine but I don't), and 2) many Japanese text
implementation efforts don't seem to have cared to conform to their own
standards ("Just get it ta work!!").

I think kon is using a JIS font, from looking at the Hello file. (For what it's
worth, konfont was installed , and there are pubfont.a.gz and pubfont.k.gz files
in usr/share/fonts but I now see it as a problem with emacs-nox missing the
necessary Japanese fonts.)

emacs version 20.4 (with Mule in it)
