Hmmm. Using the alsa driver was the ONLY way I could get sound to work
on my machine (EP-8KH+ motherboard). I did 
./configure --with-cards=via8233 # is this right?
                                  # or is it --alsa-cards=?
make 
make install
modprobe via8233
/etc/init.d/alsasound start

and my sound was up.
