I just have to ask ... do you by any chance gzip you logs on the fly as they 
get written?

If you do could you let me know how? I've been trying to get piped logging 
to work but apache just refues to work even though there is doumentation and 
examples showing how to pipe the logs to gzip as they are being written.

I'm just about to give up and submit this as an apache bug ....
