I did some more checking and it seems that my network card settings are fine 
and it is using 100Mb mode:

# mii-tool
eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok

But at the top of the MRTG generate htmlpage I get

Max Speed: 10.0 Mbits/s

Is MRTG guessing my network interface card's speed wrongly or does it know 
something mii-tool doesn't?

How can I investigate this further?
