I can't believe you just wrote that.

RedHat and several other distributions are setup with support for iptables
and ipchains as modules for the kernel.  Once inserted, userspace programs
are used to set up the firlewall rules (chains).

The two modules are incompatible with each other and cannot be installed
simultaniously.  It's either one or the other.  In the 2.4 series kernels,
ipchains support is included for backwards compatability while iptables is
the "supported" method for setting up filrewalls.
