Aha!! I think it has provided a clue (not to the bad installation I
mentioned, but to getting the regular jre recognized):
" 2. Make a symbolic link to libjavaplugin_oji140.so (JRE 1.4.0)
or libjavaplugin_oji.so (JRE 1.3.x) in your Mozilla Plugins
directory."
Mozilla has a "About Plugins" option on its Help menu, but of
course it doesn't mention that site.
Obviously it has a way to go, but I still like it.
