Just a note here. 'make menuconfig' copies the old config to .config.old
so you can go 1 step back if you need to.

Also, copying the working .config to /boot/ (or some other appropriate
place) isnt something that is commonly done. I think I first saw it done
on a Debian system first and have stuck to it ever since. It can be a great
time saver.

Thats right. 'make install' can do some serious damage so the best way
is to do the steps by hand. I found out the hard way. :-(
