- Subject: [tlug] Slightly OT: HD transfer rates vs Internet access speed
While reading the posts about building a 1U rack mount server I was
wondering about hard disk speed and Internet connection access speed. (If
this is pointless babble or completely OT just ignore ....)
Newer Mode 5 Ultra ATA EIDE drives offer a maximum data transfer rate of 100
MB/s. This would seem to mean that for a web server it would be pointless to
get an Internet connection faster than 100 MB/s since the server cannot
possily read and provide data from the HD at a rate equal to the Internet
connection.
And considering that 100 MB/s is the best possible transfer rate (not even
taking into acount any CPU cycles that have to be burned by the web server
to generate the web page), I would think that a single 100 MB/s line would
be more than sufficient.
So for a single server setup there is not point in getting more than a 100
MB/s line? Not being much of a HW person (or very good at math) can any
correct me if I am wrong?
