- Subject: [tlug] *BSD vs Linux for severs?
Ok, first off I don't want to start a Holy War or even a minor skirmish,
just looking for a few nuggets of wisdom.
A friend of mine had a company make and set-up the servers for his web site.
I asked what the company he hired used for the OS he told he had the
following:
1x RH Linux machine as a load balancer
3x RH Linux machines as web servers (Apache)
2x FreeBSD machines as DB servers (MySQL)
2x Windows2000 machines as streaming media servers
I was interested as to why the web servers and DB servers were running
different OSes and the story was something along the lines that RH installed
more easily on more hardware whereas FreeeBSD was more stable and hence
better for a DB server?
Now, I know that that makes hardly any sense, but it got me to start
thinking ...
1- is there a difference in stability when it comes to Linux vs. *BSD when
used mainly for an Apache web server or MySQL DB server?
2- Also I have as a general belief that *BSD is more stable than Linux, of
course I have no data to back this up, but ...
Besides personal preferences can anyone comment on these two points?
Thanks!
Jc
PS Oh, are there any free alternatives for streaming media assuming that
clients will be using Windows??
3-
