[tlug] Problems with encoding in sylpheed

Hi

I am using sylpheed and am having some problems.  I want the menus/messages to be displayed in English.  However when I start sylpheed like

LANG= sylpheed

I get lots of moji-bake.  The "From" and "Subject" fields display fine but the message body is all garbage.  
When I start sylpheed like

LANG=ja_JP.EUC-JP sylpheed

All works fine, except I want the menus/messages to display in English.  
Any ideas how to acheive this?
