[tlug] help w/japanese

I'm having trouble getting japanese to display in an xterm/mlterm.

If I try export LANG=ja_JP mutt, I get mojibake menu's. I suspect
it's a font issue bacuse even doing ls -al in mlterm displays "05-17"
for month/day and not the kanji equivalent.

I know I have fonts:

# xlsfonts |grep jisx

gives me the same output as Mike Fabian's page:

http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/suse-cjk/japanese-fonts.html

I'm using Xfree86-4.2, fluxbox, mlterm and xterm

Any help is appreciated.
