Doing the usual trick of exporting XMODIFIERS=@example.com=kinput2  and LC_ALL=ja_JP, I
can get the kinput2 input window to pop up, but the fonts dn't show up
correctly. Build 638 was working fine. I suspect that this might be a font
issue.
If anyone has a working setup with 1.0, I'd like to know which one of these
you use:
- Fontservers:
    xfstt or xfs-xtt
- Built-in:
    xfs module or the freetype module.
- spadmin /add fonts
