You can have this indicator at that position with other applications
(kterm, rxvt, mlterm, KDE apps, ... many others) too, if you want.
Just add 

    Kinput2*modeLocation: bottomleft

to your ~/.Xresources (see 'man kinput2').

I personally like the default ``tracktext'' better than
``bottomleft'', but several people asked me recently whether this
indicator window could be moved a bit more out of the way, because
they found it annoying close to the cursor position.
