Sure, but you wouldn't have people typing passwords in the clear in a
production script; it's trivial to write scripts to conceal passwords
as they're typed. And if you're worried about passwords in
/etc/fstab, you've got a lot of other worries, since that implies
other people can access that Linux box. While Linux is not inherently
more unsecure than Windows, it does provide a lot more power, and it
is not (obviously) designed to delegate was much security as possible
to some NT Server somewhere. The issues are not going to be what
you're used to. For example, (by default) users are going to have
home directories on the Linux box, which probably isn't true for the
Windows boxen. This means they may leave "private" files lying around
unprotected by much of anything.

Marlo> the linux box is named "freak". the workgroup is "a".

Unix networking doesn't use workgroups.

I think most Samba installations set things up so that workgroups
correspond to (Internet) subdomains so that (Internet) DNS can be
used. I also see something about SSL in your post; maybe your DNS
needs to be accessed some other way?

There should be some Samba-based way to see Windows name services
(netbios-nss?).

ISTR that Windows host names don't necessarily have anything to do
with the system name services.
