Well, I'll be damned.  I didn't expect this to _ever_ work, I've been
maintaining symlinks by hand forever.

Have you tried ripping xterm out by the roots and reinstalling (you
may need to purge to get the alternatives stuff fixed)?  Debian sucks
badly at handling self-generated-fuckeduppednessness.  LARTing is
recommended.

Did you perhaps edit some symlinks by hand?

What do your symlinks say?
