A Google search for cdrom_decode_status: error=0x34 turned
up about 3 pages of stuff.  A common thread to many of
them seemed to be bad media, either in terms of actual
scratches and such, or either defective or
burned on a CD-R that was far enough on the other side
of the compatibility tree to be incompatible with 
theirs.
