hi list,
Mandrake8.1 beta is out and today I have downloaded it (offcourse after
prompted by Saugata.... He downloaded it but has not yet installed it)....
So this just my a first look into
* Among the mirrors, I have found the following mirror fastest (at
least from my tokyo home)

http://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/Linux/distributions/Mandrake-iso/i586/
(average speed is 200kbps or more)

* it is having 2.4.8 as the default kernel and while uncompressing the
ramdisk of 2nd stage install, it has given error that "could not
uncompress 2nd stage ramdisk due to either HW problem or kernel bug". I
thought that it will stop .... but the installation continued and i got
framebuffer X with mdk beta installation (my vga card is ATI Rage LT-pro)

* in the drake partitioning utility, mdk has Reiserfs/JFS/ext3fs
support.... I have made my rootFS ext3 and my data partition reiser....
I am still scared to use jfs

* the minimum most installation is 231 mb.... (i like it). For my
typical setup (my workstation in the laptop ... everything got packed
inside 906MB)

* the installation is same cool as it could be and the best thing is
that they were showing the pictures of the developers during
installation (I have seen same thing during the mdk8.0Beta
installation.... But they removed those pics in the final mdk8.0
installation)....

* At the time of settingup of the password for root (installation
stage), DrakXinstaller has given the option of setting the password in
"local file"/"LDAP"/"NIS". I can't remember whether LDAP option was
there in MDK8 or not.

* during the installation, my pcmcia network card is detected and
offered me to setup the network..... (RH7.1 sucks bigtime here to detect
my pcmcia network card) It also offered to setup my adsl connection (but
i like to set it up in hand with my own code...)

* Newly added to the installation is the startup service manager. This
is very cool and intuitive. It has 5 main groups... "Other", "system",
"internet", "file sharing", "remote admin".... It tried to start a
service called fam. As donno the service, I switched it off.

* In version8.0, X windows setup was little messy.... but in 8.1B, it
went off cool.

* during the whole installation only problems I have found that some
icon files are missing... But they are not any important icon files.

* Aurora is taken up automatically.... This one I personally don't like :-(

* Gnome 1.4 is bundled here and it is completely integrated with
Nautilus-mozilla

* added to all, i like the latest xmms1.2.5 with tons of plugins... and
gimp1.2.2

***** importantly, my lap is still not crawling and going cool..........

More on this later .... Let me enjoy Mandrake8.1b now
