On my linux RH7.1, the /proc/cmdline has the "BOOT_IMAGE=" from lilo in it. So you shouldn't have to pass it anything if you switch off the image name. If you don't want to depend on lilo - You could also compile 2 *versions* of the kernel by changing just the EXTRAVERSION setting in the kernel Makefile, and use uname to switch between the 2.
