Well, I've never configured a system that dumped core in a panic until
very recently.  So, as Dmytry Kovalov points out, the rule probably
goes back way before Linux.

Interestingly enough, my NetBSD system has recently taken to telling
me I have an invalid dump because my swap is too small.

And as Scott Stone points out, a couple of years ago the price of
memory dropped low enough that people could afford enough RAM (>128MB)
that the stable Linux kernel could not handle that much swap.  That
period didn't last long, of course, but it was there.
