Ahhh, I didn't know about the service command. Learn something new everyday :)

This is not important to nntp actually working, but if you put the 
following comment headings in your /etc/xinetd.d/nntp file, then chkconfig
will recognise it...

# default: on
# description: Leafnode is ...

Glad you got it working... I would hate you to think that that other OS
was easier :)
