Hmm. I don't know what you mean. Low-level network connections are handled by the kernel, via a driver for the network card. There is the inetd daemon, though, that listens on behalf of various programs, starting them up if a connection comes in. And then there are daemons that handle other things, like mail. > > Long question: > > I've exhausted all the documentation and books that I can find so any > help is appreciated. You might try the Network Administrator's Guide, online here: http://www.linuxdoc.org/guides.html Or maybe a general Unix administrator's guide. I recommend the "UNIX System Administration Handbook", by Evi Nemeth, et. al.: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0130206016/qid=993202960/sr=1-1/ref=sc_b_1/102-1356702-9783358 It covers Linux and a number of other flavors of Unix, including information on network configuration and troubleshooting, plus configuration of things like DNS and mail. > > I have a Netgear FA310TX ethernet card installed in an Intel box > running > Redhat 7.1, I have a Windows latop trying to talk to it. > > The Linux machine is not responding to pings and cannot ping the > latop. Perhaps the interface is not up. You might try "ifup". How about giving us the output from "ifconfig -a". > > ---- > Self Intro > > I'm an Aussie, and work at The Yamasa Institute a Japanese school in > Okazaki, Aichi. My hobby is reading a book. Nice to meet you (virtually). I am an American living in Taipei, Taiwan. I still haven't made it over for a TLUG Nomikai....maybe someday. > > Brett > > Jake __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
