but, he's not advertising this network.. you CANT advertise this network..
he has machines on 192.168.1.x and 192.168.2.x... only way for them to talk
to each other if they're on the same LAN is to use a netmask larger than
/24, or put in a router, or multi-home interfaces.

It might work, but when you use a 255.255.0.0 netmask, you're trying
to say "My network is the /16 from 196.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255" 
which, of course, it's not.  As far as everyone knows, his network 
is 192.168.1.0/24.  

Just because you aren't advertising a network to the Internet,
that doesn't mean you shouldn't set everything up correctly.
