It's not just that; because the solution is non-standard, it also
means the patch must be updated every time an app is changed.
Furthermore, it makes it very difficult for those not hacking the
patch (or at least the app) to understand what's going on.

It is therefore a suboptimal solution for Japanese as well.  It's
almost as bad as going Microsoft in practice (the extra resources M$
puts into getting it somewhat more right about balance the extra
opacity enforced by the proprietary license).

In fact, I would argue[1] that many of these patches violate the GPL,
because once they're applied, the source is no longer the "preferred
medium" for further development.  ;-)

Unfortunately, it _is_ typical of Japanese patches (and most of the
Japanese software whose code I've read, in general).
