Thanks to all for their help.  I _still_ would like to know if it is
possible to read those broken packets somehow, and if so, how to do it.

My friendly local technician jiggled the wires, and the errors have
gone away as far as I can tell.  So it looks like Scott wins the
prize.  And there was no need to disturb Beavis at play.

I will advocate to my budget committee that we keep a bunch of spare
transceivers around (thanks to Jonathan and Frank for sharing their
experience).  Actually, I'll advocate upgrading to a faster medium,
but what I'll probably get is spare 10Base5 transceivers :-)
