Other free imnput besides WNN?

All of the input methods with servers are probably rife with security
issues, since they all are network-able and are coded by Japanization
geeks, not by security wonks.

SKK (formerly favored by Emacs people, since although it now has a
server it was originally an all-lisp implementation), Canna, and
FreeWnn all have reasonably strong fan clubs.  I use Canna,
personally, but if I were starting today FreeWnn would be a strong
candidate.

As for acceptance by the Japanese Linux community, the Japanese Linux
community is somewhat less about freedom than you might think.  Wnn6
and now ATOK are getting quite good reception from a large group of
Linux users, despite being proprietary.  If you are thinking about
putting out a commercial/easy-to-use Japanese Linux distribution, you
may want to consider that.  The audience for that kind of distro is
more likely to be swayed by modern input methods.  The libertarians
are using Debian or one of the home-grown .org distros like Vine or
Kondara.
