I really don't understand why a new-model laptop is using a NIC based on
the old vortex (i.e., 3c59x) -- but:

It is indeed a 3c555, but the driver is not ... hey, see if the laptop has
power management turned on.  If so, turn it off and see if that changes
anything.  My suspicion is that the NIC hasn't woken up yet.
