This morning's Wall Street Journal reports that a consortium of 23 companies and two Japanese universities aims to create a Linux-based embedded operating system for use with the next generation of phones and other gadgets. Looks like somebody finally figured out that standards create markets. The firms include Toshiba, Sony, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric, Canon, Elmic Systems, Lineo Japan, Red Hat, and Metrowerks. The universities are Waseda U and the Toyohashi Institute of Technology. The chairman of the consortium is to be Professor Tatsuo Nakajima of Waseda. The article (in the subscription-only area, I think) is at: Cheers, ---- -x80 Frank G Bennett, Jr @@ Faculty of Law, Nagoya Univ () email: bennett@example.com Tel: +81[(0)52]789-2239 ()
