tlug: the cron that won't kill

Thank you, Simon, for the advice on using cron.
I ran into a snag, however.
It's probably something stupid, but I can't
figure out what it is yet.

"killall pppd" typed in as root works fine,
the modem clicks off and ppp can be restarted
again.

I put this in /etc/cron.daily/killppp.cron (a new file):

#!/bin/sh

killall pppd

and changed /etc/crontab so that the daily tasks would be
handled at a test time (a few minutes after the editing
of these file). I then stopped and restarted
/etc/rc.d/init.d/crond .

Cron kicked in when its time rolled around. I could hear
...something happening...maybe it doing its other daily
tasks. However, the modem didn't click off; pppd was
not killed.

I tried killall -HUP pppd and then
killall -9 pppd , just to see if
anything different would happen;
nothing did.

I also tried rebooting the system to see
if that would do the trick, but no luck.
Any ideas?

Thanks.
