Wrong interpretation of $. Hint:

son-of-bofh:~$ fuser -v /dev/dsp
son-of-bofh:~$ apropos fuser
fuser                (1)  - identify processes using files or sockets

This is why your $PROMPT should always have a space appended to it....

Well, if $fusers isn't defined, the shell interprets $fusers -v /dev/dsp
in a rather silly manner....
