I missed the original post, but guess you have an off-board Promise
controller. As has already been suggested, you need to roll a
custom kernel with the experimental (?) pdc driver enabled. Also 
answer yes to "Boot off-board chipsets first support". This makes 
the off board controllers numbered as ide0/ide1 (instead of the default
of on-board controllers being ide0/ide1 and off-board ide2/ide3).
Then you can boot from ide0, say, connected to the Promise controller.
You need to use  "ide0=dc4030" as kernel boot parameter. For example,
boot as 

linux ide0=dc4030
