I'm not sure you want to.  :-)  I believe the consensus is that the 2.2 USB
code is less than ideal.

The USB code has changed/improved significantly between the 2.2 and 2.3
kernels.  If you aren't interested in risking a 2.3 series kernel, you might
check out the "backport" that someone has done to put the 2.3 USB code into
the 2.2 kernel.  http://www.suse.cz/development/usb-backport/
