Both, actually, but moreso the book.

It took them almost 10 years to produce the close to 12 hours of film
that comprise the extended cuts; I can understand why certain bits had
to be glossed over.

I agree, but see above.

Peter Jackson's LotR sucks, it's just that all other theatrical
adaptations are destined to suck more. ;)

I think that PJ and his crew held close to the spirit of the book and
of Middle Earth in general, and the inclusion of people like John Howe
and Alan Lee lends a certain credibility to the design.
