Since this thread is getting more and more off topic
(but interesting) I though I should throw some
more (off topic) logs in the fire...

What about "the Lemelson patent" on using some kind
of radiation to detect stuff? It might sound strange
but there actually is a patent that covers all forms
of image processing. All. I am not sure about the
exact patent text but the patent holder (the Lemelson
Center, I believe) claims it covers bar code readers,
optical inspection, machine vision etc.

The guy Lemelson applied for the patent 1955 or so
but stalled the process so the patent did not become
valid until a few years ago. 

This is a case where I feel the (at least US) patent
laws create a strange, and unfair, situation where for 
example all bar code reader manufacturers has to pay
royalties.
