Just a hunch (and maybe a wrong one), but is procmail defined as your
local mailer in sendmail.cf?  I'm not sure if not defining it that
way will cause the errors you're getting or not, but maybe.  Your
ideas about smrsh may also be on target.  RH 5.2 would have come
with an older version of sendmail, 8.8.something, I think.  The 8.9
series has tightened security even further, so there may be some
good reason why it's disallowing that .forward file.  What exactly
is it supposed to be doing, anyway?

Here are some snips from my sendmail.cf.  Does yours have similar
entries for the procmail mailer spec and local mailer?
