Thanks for all the helpful messages regarding the GeForce256.

Unfortunately for me the GeForce256 is not compatible enough with the TNT2. 
This is the response that I got from nVidia, and is included here FYI just 
in case anyone else out there is thinking on slapping in a GeForce256... 
looks like we'll just have to wait for the 4.0 beta...

   The GeForce support has been added to the development branch of XFree86 
4.0.  The next public beta should have the support you're looking for,
