Re: tlug: Redhat 6 and Japanese.

Hello James,

I'm new to this list and facing the same problems as you. I can at least tell
you what I've learned so far.

I bought a nice fat book on Red Hat (Red Hat Linux Secrets, at a bookstore in
Uvatoria, by the way), only to find that versions of RH from 5.0 don't support
the Japanese extensions that had been tested and made available. Or at least
that's what I understand after reading the list archives. I did find the Web
site of the Linux Japanese RPM Project (http://www.linux.or.jp/jrpm/), which
does offer Japanese extension packages for 5.x and 6.0 (I think). The site is
in Japanese. (As an aside, this site gave me problems at first because my
browser, which uses RealPlayer as a plug-in, was apparently confused by the .rpm
extensions to the files there. As a result, the dang thing tried to read them
with RealPlayer. I finally caught on and used another browser.)

I also have a Japanese book (Tokoton Tsukaeru Linux: Tetteiteki Katsuyou
Guide), came with Slackware 3.5 CDs. I'm leaning toward using that instead of
RH, because I'm not really prepared to pick and choose RPM packages myself,
although the site above does provide results of a survey asking users to
recommend which RH packages to install. The Slackware CD comes with the all
Japanese extensions needed, and its installer (ezinst) will put them in the
right directories for you. Sounds good to this newbie.

Anyway, maybe we can help each other along.
