I did this with the TL-J Jpine, Canna, Kinput2, Muriyari Netscape,
kterm, and Japanese font packages.  They all seemed OK, but your "not
recommended" point is well taken:  it may work, it may not, so anyone
who tries this is swimming at their own risk.
