tlug: PPP only works once, then reboot

Can anybody shed some light on this odd problem?

This week, I began experiencing an effect in which I can only make a PPP
connection once, and after that pppd is apparently unable to talk to the
serial port.  It doesn't matter whether I connect my TA to comm1 or
comm2, and nothing informative is being logged to syslog, not even with
running pppd in debug mode.  All I get is what can be found at the
bottom of this post.

The only cure I've found so far is to reboot, a most distasteful thing
for a Linux user  :-)

This problem didn't surface until a couple or three days ago when I
arrived home from work to find that machine crashed from the heat
(doesn't bother any of my other PCs or my 3 old Sparcstations, but this
one is touchy), so I suspect this may possibly be a hardward thing, but
second opinions are welcome.  Fortunately, I already have plans to put a
new MB and CPU in that machine anyway. 

One other symptom: when this effect takes place, killing pppd from a
kterm will crash X every time.  Seems weird.
