Really? Are they crazy? They should just load the MBR and start the
code in there. They shouldn't even know about the format of the
partition table. Some OSes (IIRC at least Nextstep) do not
partition the disk at all.

Ok, they may check for a magic number (so that they dont boot from the
bunch of zeroes you have just written to your MBR), but that's it.
