tlug: Freetype & Japanese?

I've compiled freetype & gd into php, and on the Nth attempt it finally
worked. I copied over msgothic.ttc and hgrskp.ttf from NT, and though it
works for English, Japanese appears as mojibake (small squares mostly).

Is this a limitation of freetype, or has someone got this working?
