I had similar problems with an "aftermarket" driver for a Logitec SCSI
adapter.  What you do (after pausing to hope that the card matches the
driver you're about to force on it) is edit the file /etc/pcmcia/config.

For the above, you would add something like:

card "That blasted 3Com card that I have been fighting with"
  version "3com", "Megahertz 589E","*","*"
  bind "3c589_cs"

When the card manager is next started, it should recognize the card
and load the 3c589_cs driver.  And they all lived happily ever after.
