Not necessarily. I built them from the SRPMS, and though I don't
recall tweaking the specs at all, it's conceivable I had some screwy
environment variable setting.

If it makes any difference, my system is very mixed ... 'twas
originally RH 5.0, but probably the majority of packages now are from
5.1, with a few from 5.2 and a lot of non-RPM software. The libjpeg
packages came from the 5.1-libjpeg-update group.

By the way, what's wrong with having a statically-linked libjpeg?
