Xnest has a _much_ smaller memory footprint; if you're tricky you can
probably arrange that it live on one virtual desktop in *vwm.

XEmacs will drop dead for a couple seconds for me fairly frequently
when I'm working in a very smart application (VM or w3). But I rarely
saw GCs and other delays even on a 50MHz 80486 with 32MB of RAM when
running XEmacs + X11 + Netscape 2.something, and doing ordinary
editing (eg AUCTeX, cc-mode, or PSGML).

My current invocation of XEmacs is up around 33MB (on a P5 133 with
64MB available), and I don't have any problems (except in VM, and
that's because VM keeps whole multi-MB folders in a buffer). It's
probably time to build the next beta and strat from scratch again ;-)
