Nah.  That's what handshaking is for.

Decent serial performance wasn't a sparc design consideration.  The UART
(Zilog 8530) can handle higher speeds, but it's not clocked fast enough.
ISTR that 76800bps can be achieved under certain conditions, but usually
you're constrained to 38400.
