The intel box is running a more current version of RH, right?

It's going to be something quite ancient.  ppp-2.1.2 perhaps.

Under normal circumstances, I'd recommend that pppd be recompiled from
source (ftp://cs.anu.edu.au/pub/software/ppp/ppp-2.3.5.tar.gz).  In this
case ... I'm not sure that ppp-2.3.5 will work properly with a stock
2.0.2x kernel.

If the new pppd acts strangely, you'll need to use a newer kernel.  I
think the one from RH-5.2 will work okay.
