In general Unix linkers are called `ld', I doubt Sun would call theirs 
anything else.  This can get confusing ;-) but I'm sure you are right.

Yes, as you say `ld' can link objects as long as they're in the
correct format.  What I meant is that often OSes provide special
features (threads, real-time, etc), and sometimes these are provided
through special linker actions; these would not be available on Linux.

Usually GNU products are featureful, but if features conflict with
something in Stallman's religion they get omitted with extreme
prejudice.  :-)
