How does DOS handle this?  I'm assuming that the answer is 'poorly', but
it does seem to handle floppies somewhat better than Linux (then again, it
doesn't need to worry about multiple FS types, etc...).

Man, i wish whoever designed the PC floppy drive had put in an eject
motor/locking mechanism..
